Barry Horne joins the IMAS Board!

IMAS is delighted to announce that Barry Horne MBE has joined the IMAS Board and the Mixed Ability family!

Barry is the Chief Executive of Activity Alliance, the National charity which works to get more disabled people active across England. Over the past 12 years, Barry has led the transformation, significant growth, and increased impact of the Activity Alliance (formerly English Federation of Disability Sport), being instrumental in establishing the organisation as the most trusted voice for disabled people in sport and physical activity.

Barry was also instrumental in developing the Activity Alliance’s new strategic objectives, namely to change attitudes towards disabled people in sport and physical activity, and to embed inclusive practice into organisations, which are both crucial steps towards achieving fairness for disabled people who want to be active. A good example of this is the Get Out and Get Active programme (GOGA) which Barry was instrumental in setting up. GOGA has a successful track record of engaging disabled and non-disabled people in new and varied methods of activity.

Barry’s former role was as a Corporate Director in a large City Council but has worked in a range of roles including as Chief Executive of the East Midlands Regional Assembly and Regional Local Government Association, with an early career in the community and voluntary sector.

IMAS is pleased that, with his well-deserved retirement just a few days away, Barry has agreed to help Mixed Ability Sports develop to its next stage.

Barry said: “After years of admiring the fantastic work to grow Mixed Ability Sport, I’m delighted to be joining the family! I’ve spent over twelve years working to support more disabled people to be active and when I retire from my day job (later this week!) I’ve decided to have just this one active role as a volunteer in sport. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in!”.

Martino Corazza and Mark Goodwin, IMAS Co-Directors said “Barry is a terrific addition to our Board. He brings extensive knowledge of the sector and a unique view that combines governance and strategic expertise, traits that are going to be fundamental over the next few months. We had the pleasure to spend some time with Barry during IMART in Cork, and asking him to be part of IMAS seemed a natural progression. We are excited to be working with him and the rest of the Board as we grow Mixed Ability but we promise we’ll allow enough time for Barry to enjoy his campervan!”
