Last week IMAS and England Squash were proud to announce their new partnership, sharing the mixed ability model with clubs across Greater Manchester, London, the Midlands and Yorkshire. As part of the package of support available to clubs, each would be partnered with a Regional Development Manager (RDM) for assistance in delivering mixed ability within their club for the first time.
Whilst IMAS are very proud to boast Aron Harper-Robinson, founder of Calder Community Squash and England Squash consultant, amongst their RDM’s, squash was a new sport for the rest of the team. Sunday 22 October therefore saw a meet up at The Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham for a crash course in all things squash! Throughout the afternoon Aron explained the basics of the sport and how it can be effectively delivered in the mixed ability format. Drawing upon his experiences successfully starting teams across Yorkshire, Aron’s training covered the court environment, mini games and the rules themselves. The whole afternoon was firmly centred on fun, and Mike (Midlands) and Dan (South West) were very happy to come out victorious in the inter-RDM doubles fixture!
With regional training days already planned in London and the Midlands for November 2023, clubs are able to book via this link. The day will consist of a morning with Access Sport focusing on disability awareness followed by IMAS’s Mixed Ability squash training. The session will be delivered by Aron with the support of the region’s RDM, all of whom have 5+ years of experience with the format and have started sustainable teams within their chosen sports.
